The Gentle Giant Classic is fast becoming one of the premier events on the annual South African bodybuilding calendar.
The first event was staged in 2017, where a total prize fund of R500 000 was up for grabs. Just over 100 athletes competed. During the event, the “pay-it-forward” concept was used – the line-up winner in each category was allowed to nominate any of his or her fellow competitors to receive a R1 000 cash prize.
In 2018, the Gentle Giant Classic took place at Word and Life Church in Boksburg, Gauteng on 26 and 27 October. Wayne Price took over the role of event promoter, and the event hosted approximately 250 athletes, including many from the rest of Africa. The prize money totaled R1 000 000 over 33 different line-ups. The top six athletes in each category received medals and cash prizes, while the overall winners were also awarded trophies. The pay-it-forward concept was used once gain and proved very popular.
The Gentle Giant Series involves ten shows around South Africa, each with a R100 000 prize pool, while the eleventh show hands out R1 000 000 in prizes. The motivation behind this series is to assist athletes financially in order for them to be able to compete throughout the year. It has become the biggest money show and series in South Africa. The events are open to all federations, but they remain International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) and Bodybuilding South Africa (BBSA) events judged on IFBB criteria.
The dates for the 2019 Gentle Giant Series will be announced soon.
